Our Environmental Footprint

Our building casts a great shadow to the west, during the morning hours, and in the afternoon that shadow spreads across the River Thames and darkens the park beyond, to our east. This alone has a significant impact on the plants, trees and wildlife living around us.

Indeed, we also affect our environment in a great many other ways. Our building has some 220 plus units accomodating approximately 350 residents. The garbage that we produce
(which we either carry down to the recycle bins or cast down the chute to eventually end up in landfills) contains many deadly toxins and pollutants. The chemicals which keep our sidewalks clear of snow during the winter months eventually wash into the sewers or directly into the river. The oil which leaks from the some 250 vehicles which are in our parking lot also ends up in sewers, the river or the aquifer, lying many hundreds of feet, below us. These automobiles also pump carbon dioxide and combustion byproducts into the atmosphere as we drive around. Many of our aging air-conditioners leak freon gas directly into the atmosphere. The food we choose to purchase is transported, in a great number of instances, from many thousands of miles away.

Our children, grandchildren and all future generations will inherit these waste products, all of which will lessen the quality of their lives.

What can we do to lessen this impact?

Free Cycle (recycling at it's best)

"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." - Native American Proverb

An Inconvenient Truth

"The good news is we know what to do. The good news is, we have everything we need now to respond to the challenge of global warming. We have all the technologies we need; more are being developed. And as they become available and become more affordable when produced in scale, they will make it easier to respond. But we should not wait, we cannot wait, we must not wait." - Al Gore

Environment Canada

"For many of us, water simply flows from a faucet, and we think little about it beyond this point of contact. We have lost a sense of respect for the wild river, for the complex workings of a wetland, for the intricate web of life that water supports." - Sandra Postel, Last Oasis: Facing Water Scarcity, 2003

100 mile diet

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead (1901-1978) quoted in John M. RIchardson, ed. Making it Happen, 1982

Ecological Footprint (Wikipedia)

"It is our collective and individual responsibility to protect and nurture the global family, to support its weaker members and to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live." - Dalai Lama
